Itxassou, France to Bakio, Spain (Basque Coast)

Okay so some of you might be thinking “why on earth is it taking them so long to get any where”. Well hopefully some of the pictures on this post will give you an idea of some of the awesome scenery that we HAVE to look at and take time to appreciate.

The weather is starting to get a bit warmer (not that it has been exactly cold anyway)  and we have discarded one layer of riding gear, the jacket liners.  A couple of mornings lately the mist has been a bit deceiving and it looks colder than it really is.  We are still avoiding the Toll & Motorways where possible so we get the best views but unfortunately this  usually leads to going directly into the heart of the larger towns which slows us down a bit, not to mention causes US to get a bit hot under the collar :)

We crossed into Spain today which I think is our 10^th country for this trip.  This area of Spain is known as the Basque region and it is just gorgeous!

Our first coffee stop for the day. The road above the arches is the very steep, very windy little road you have to take to get down here, thankfully we didn’t have to go back up the same way.

So after all that beautiful scenery on the road we had to find a place to rest our poor eyes but alas we could only find this place :)

I hope you get some idea from the photo’s, including the one at the top of the page,  just  how perfect this place is and how spectacular the view is from the terrace.

You can walk out to the island but by the time we got here it was to late

Unfortunately they weren't serving dinner so we had to get back on the bike to go into Bakio.

2015 06 01 Matres to Itxassou

Matres to Itxassou

The Southern French country side is lush & green and all the flowers are in bloom which is very beautiful with one little draw back, I suffer with hay fever.  So after a nice ride though the little township of Matres and some  more of the beautiful country side we stopped for a coffee (naturally) and  conveniently there was a chemist right next door:)
Another coffee stop and yet more beautiful country side we reached a caravan park in Itxassou (no I had never heard of it either and still can't pronounce it).

We are going to lobby the Tasmania government to have this erected every where in the state!

Our little cabin for the night.

The lady at the reception said the supermarket was only 1 1km walk away.  French kilometres must be different than Australian one's because we walked about 5kms and still didn't find it!  What we did find was a great little place to get good food and a small bottle of local Rose'

2015 05 30 Beziers to Matres (camping Le Moulin)

Beziers to Matres & camping Le Moulin

This morning was a bit difficult for Maurice as the locals were setting up for their Saturday market as we left Beziers.  He had spotted a stall he really wanted to look at but he managed to restrain himself :)
The ride through the countryside was great and it was nice to spot some of the places we stopped at in 2012.
Camping Le Moulin is still the beautiful spot we remembered and the women in the bakery at Cazeres are as friendly as ever.
We were lucky that a local parade/festival/thingy was happening in Matres on Sunday complete with mock battle.
